Astoria, Oregon to Monmouth, Oregon

Updated: May 7, 2020

We started our trip by taking the train to Portland and then a bus to Astoria. We had shipped our bikes ahead of time and they were ready to go when we arrived. On Saturday, June 18 we started riding from the Columbia River Maritime Museum. This is the official starting point for the Trans America Bicycle Trail. Within an hour we were in Lewis & Clark country. This is a beautiful, densely forested area. We ended the first day along the coast in a town called Wheeler. The Oregon coast is quite hilly and we spent much of the first 3 days climbing. We had a beautiful campsite right on the water. The sunset was fantastic. The next day we did some cheese tasting at the Tillamook Cheese Factory. We met other cyclists. Some were traveling from Canada to Mexico while others were heading north along the coast.
